Katsushika Hokusai was a Japanese artist, ukiyo-e painter and printmaker. He is best known for his woodblock print series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (c.1831). The British Museum opened its doors in 1759 and has become one of the world’s best-known and most-visited museums. The museum’s wide-ranging collections include about eight million objects covering two million years of human history. Due to its objects being widely collected during the era of the British Empire, its permanent collection is among the largest and most comprehensive in existence.
